Statement on the Bombing of an IDP Shelter in West Kordofan

The Bawadi Peace and Development Organization strongly and unequivocally condemns the heinous crime of bombing an internally displaced persons (IDP) shelter in the city of Al-Sunut, West Kordofan State, which occurred on 16 February 2026. The attack, carried out by a drone belonging to the Sudanese Armed Forces, resulted in the killing of 28 civilians and the injury of others, including women, children, the elderly, and the sick, while they were inside the shelter.

This deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian gathering sites constitutes a grave crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. It reflects a systematic pattern by the military leadership in the use of force against civilians, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, showing complete disregard for the sanctity of Sudanese lives and for the rules protecting civilian objects.

Bawadi Organization considers this crime an extension of a series of serious violations that have exacerbated the humanitarian catastrophe, entrenched a culture of impunity, and deepened the suffering of displaced persons who are supposed to be protected, not bombed.

We declare our full solidarity with the families of the victims and the wounded, and we hold the military leadership of the Sudanese Armed Forces fully and directly responsible for this crime.

We call on the international community, UN mechanisms, and all human rights organizations to take urgent action to launch an independent international investigation, bring direct charges against the military leadership and all those involved, and ensure that they are held criminally accountable without impunity.

The protection of civilians is not a political option; it is a legal and moral obligation that cannot be compromised.
